Born into a minority community, she witnessed the discrimination and inequality faced by marginalised groups and was inspired to take action. Political Awakening and Grassroots Initiatives: In her youth, Dr. Hanifdeen engaged in political activism by joining a leftist party in Sri Lanka. 🕊️ Three Years Since the People’s Struggle: A Visionary Movement or a Hijacked Uprising?

By Dr. Seyed Firdawoosbee Hanifdeen

Today — July 9, 2025 — marks three years since the Aragalaya, the mass uprising that shook Sri Lanka in 2022. What began as a protest against unbearable economic hardship soon transformed into something larger: a symbolic rebellion against corruption, impunity, and broken systems. For many, the movement represented a visionary effort to reclaim justice, equity, and dignity for all Sri Lankans.

Yet, the struggle unfolded without a clear or defined leadership. This created a vacuum — one that was soon filled by various disruptive forces. Extremist elements, hidden agendas, and opportunistic actors infiltrated the movement, not to serve the people’s aspirations, but to install their own leaders and fulfill their own motives.

During the early stages, even Ranil Wickremesinghe — then a member of parliament — expressed his support for the people's right to protest. However, within 24 hours of assuming the presidency, he ordered brutal crackdowns on the very citizens who were camping at Galle Face Green demanding reform. Tents were destroyed, protesters were assaulted, and military forces occupied the protest site — signaling a shift from people's power to authoritarian order.

Three years later, we must ask: was this truly a visionary struggle, or was it an idealistic force that was manipulated and derailed by political opportunists?

Conclusion

The Aragalaya was, for those who ignited it, a noble movement — a cry for justice and a push for a better, more accountable Sri Lanka. But without proper leadership, a roadmap, and a cohesive vision, the movement became vulnerable to exploitation.

As we reflect today, the most critical question remains:
Did we lose the true vision of the people’s struggle? Or are we still on the path toward realizing it — with greater awareness and responsibility?
